East vs West: Top 5 celebrity weddings from 2014

It has been a year filled with great news and we at W&T have been kept busy with the countless A-list nuptials. From Kimye’s over-the-top affair to Ariel Lin’s star-studded wedding day, we look back at 2014’s most talked about celebrity weddings.

1. George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin
Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor is officially taken and that is, understandably, big news. Dozens of paparazzi gathered at the various locations where the wedding celebrations were held – like Venice and England – and George Clooney, 52, and British-based human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, did not disappoint the huge media turnout. Apart from weeks of parties which filled tabloid pages, 36-year-old Alamuddin’s impeccable style got everyone talking as well!

2. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
And so they are finally married, after what seemed like eternity, in August. But the world’s attention fell on the bride’s wedding dress – and for a good reason.

From the front, it had looked like any other traditional white satin gown, but the back was a real surprise. The creation by Donatella Versace featured drawings of the couple’s six children – Maddox, 13; Pax, 10; Zahara, nine; Shiloh, eight; and six-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox – which were embroidered on the gown and veil.

3. Behati Prinsloo and Adam Levine
The wedding which was held in San José del Cabo, Mexico, was “a night of gorgeous locale, food and a night of rock ‘n’ roll performances worthy of a music festival, according to various western media.

4. Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson
For their New Orleans wedding, Solange Knowles and longtime boyfriend and video director Alan Ferguson showed they have a dramatic, fun flair. Not only did they ride up to the wedding on matching white bicycles, but the bride wore a white Stephane Rolland jumpsuit with an attached cape, then changed into all-white Humberto Leon for Kenzo floor-length gown with another matching cape! Now, that’s cool!

5. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
You didn’t think we could have forgotten all about them right? Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have always been over the top and their Euro-hopping wedding was no different. Throw in a Vogue cover – which had Kardashian gushing on Twitter as a “dream come true” – they clearly deserved the title as the #World’sMostTalkedAboutCouple‘s big day.

1. Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu
The secret nuptials of local TV stars Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu clearly topped one of Singapore’s biggest entertainment news for 2014. The hush-hush ceremony was attended by the couple’s families from Singapore and Guangzhou, and it was not known until photos on celebrity hairstylist David Gan’s Instagram account leaked news of the event. Why so secretive, right?

2. Yvonne Lim and Alex Tien
Local actress Yvonne Lim tied the knot with former Mandopop boyband member, Alex Tien, in September at the swanky Ritz Carlton Hotel. The couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Alex Junior, on December 27.

3. Vivian Hsu and Sean Lee
Taiwanese actress Vivian Hsu and her boyfriend, Singapore-based businessman Sean Lee, held two weddings in the romantic Bali and Taipei this year. Both of which captured much buzz on W&T. The former was memorable because the couple performed a song titled “Till I Met You”, according to Taiwan media. The song was composed by both Lee and Hsu. The former wrote the music and she penned the lyrics which went: “Till I met you/We Believe/What is destiny.” Hsu was reportedly so moved that she teared several times.

4. Zhou Xun and Archie Kao
The 40-year-old Chinese actress said “I do” to her American Chinese boyfriend, Archie Kao during a charity event held in Hangzhou, and announced their engagement news towards the end of the night, making a grand entrance decked out in their wedding best.

5. Ariel Lin and Charles Lin
A star-studded engagement party was only befitting for one of Taiwan’s most popular actress. Ariel Lin, who has starred in numerous popular idol dramas, first got engaged to her boyfriend Charles Lin, on her 32nd birthday in Taipei in October, before having her official wedding on Christmas eve. The guest list included Taiwanese celebrities including Chen Bo Lin, Kai Ko, Christine Fan and husband “Blackie”.

Steal the look of… Penny Tai

On our blog, we often share inspirations about how to make your big day closer to perfection. We also absolutely love sharing happy news about celebrities and/or famous personalities who have tied the knot and moved on to the next stage in life.

And on the list of famous newlyweds this year is Malaysian singer-songwriter Penny Tai who tied the knot with her Taiwanese boyfriend Sidney Lu on Saturday (Dec 27) in Taipei. (If you missed our entry on that, click here!) Certainly a sight to behold, we want to furnish you with some ideas on how you can make her look yours.

The look: The quirky songbird opted for a Ersa Atalier lacey wedding gown followed by a Yolan Cris pant suit. When asked about her wedding gowns at a meet-the-press session prior to the banquet, Penny quipped that she preferred a gown with long sleeves as she was afraid of the cold.

Make it yours: If you are of the mindset that a long-sleeved wedding dress implies a conservative, cautious attitude, let us prove you wrong!

Another piece by Rosa Clara – we simply adore this ‘Armilla’ dress from the brand’s 2012 collection.

US couple changed wedding location for President Obama’s golf game

A military couple had to change their wedding venue at the request of the White House, officials said on earlier this week. Natalie Heimel and her husband, Edward Mallue Jr., both Army captains, had planned to hold their wedding ceremony on the 16th green of the Marine Base Hawaii golf course on Saturday (December 24).

But U.S. president Barack Obama, who is vacationing on the island, had planned to golf the course at the same time. According to NBC News, the manager of the couple’s catering company had to call the bride-to-be to offer an alternative location with “an even nicer view.”

But as it turned out, the bride and groom weren’t too disappointed because they received a post nuptial-greeting from none other than the president himself.

“Congratulations on your wedding,” the president said in a call following his golf gaffe. “I feel terrible. Nobody told us… I hope the wedding went OK.”

“It was a blessing in disguise,” Mallue replied, according to NBC News.

An administration official said that White House staff didn’t know of the debacle until Bloomberg News, who first reported the story Monday morning, called for a comment, NBC News reported.

Just married: Penny Tai holds wedding in Taipei

After registering for marriage in August, Malaysian singer-songwriter Penny Tai tied the knot with her Taiwanese boyfriend Sidney Lu Saturday (Dec 27) in Taipei. According to media reports, the songbird will be throwing another banquet in her hometown next year.

The wedding: Held at Taipei’s Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, the wedding was originally meant to be an outdoor event until an unexpected downpour occurred. The couple and their 300 guests adjourned indoors.

According to reports, it was a modern wedding with a band entertaining and guests seated at rows of tables.

The dress: The quirky songbird wore an Ersa Atalier lacey wedding gown followed by a Yolan Cris pant suit. When asked about her wedding gowns at a meet-the-press session prior to the banquet, Penny quipped that she had opted to include long sleeves as well as a turtle neck into the designs of her gowns, because she was afraid of the cold.

The songbird, who won ‘Best Female Singer’ at the most recent Golden Melody Award, was also unconventional when it came to wedding photos. A devout Buddhist, Penny traveled to the Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal for the photoshoot. In the photos, the 36-year-old struck poses in a beautiful ethnic-styled black dress designed by New York-based designer Mara Hoffmans.

The guests: Fellow Malaysians, singer Fish Leong, Gary Cao and actress Angelica Lee were among the attendees.

Fashion: Badgley Mischka Spring 2015 Collection

Those of you fashionistas who are familiar with Hollywood fashion will be no stranger to Badgley Mischka. After all, this is the designer who has been named as one of Vogue’s top 10 American designers, and has dressed A-list celebrities such as Madonna, Sharon Stone, Catherine Zeta-Jones and so on.

Badgley Mischka’s Spring 2015 bridal collection, of course, is as glamorous as its couture creations. From what we see, the collection is strong on fitted dresses with beautiful flowing silhouettes, and features some of 2015’s hottest trends, such as embellishments and illusion backs. We’re absolutely torn between which is our favourite piece from the collection: the dress with a dangerously low scooping illusion back embellished with exquisite beadwork, the lace dress with a sheer front panel for its easy bohemian charm, the dress with a low embellished back and a dramatic pleated skirt, or the dress with a structured embellished bodice with a princessy tulle skirt.

And another plus point — we love how the designer has juxtaposed these delicate dresses against the scraggly beach environment and styled the models with hot smoky eye makeup and wet hair. Absolutely edgy! Check out the smothering shoot below!

Taiwanese actress Ariel Lin says ‘I do’ on Christmas eve

Actress Ariel Lin and her fiancé, Charles Lin, held their wedding celebration on Christmas eve in Taiwan. According to media reports, the couple, who had a star-studded engagement party in October, invited over 600 guests consisting of close family members and friends.

Lin, who is known for TV idol dramas including “In Time with You” and “It started with a Kiss” in which she was awarded the Golden Bell Awards’ “Best Actress for Drama”, changed into three different gowns for the night.

After the headline-grabbing engagement party, the media were reportedly not given access to this wedding reception. However, a crowd of camera-welding reporters blocked her arrival at the banquet hall. Luckily, the banquet hall’s security guards used umbrellas to cover the couple and blocked off any source of photography. Hence, the only source of photos was from the celebrity guests themselves including Mickey Huang and Xie Na.

Prior to the wedding, the couple visited Charles’ hometown. Besides paying respects to Charles’ ancestors, Ariel also abided by the family traditions of throwing a fan out of her car window on the wedding day, to symbolize the riddance of bad habits. The Lins have been dating for over two years.

Merry Christmas Weddings

Christmas or not, it’s always tropical and sunny all year round in Singapore. Are we the only ones who are wishing for a white Christmas? Today, we take you on a journey to the other half of the world to check out how other couples are enjoying their romantic winter Christmas weddings. We’ll let the pictures do the talking! Have a Merry Christmas with lots of love!

White and Red

We love this London wedding simply because it is the most classic white Christmas wedding, ever. From the snow, to the pure white wedding gown, to the accent of red, this is exactly what we’re talking about when we say “white Christmas”!

Silver and Blue

Another classic colour palette for Christmas, we love how this couple kept things simple and chic with their Christmas wedding. The venue of the wedding dinner, which features traditional brick walls, is a perfect fit for the Christmas theme. The room was also lit with silver and blue fairy lights, as a nod to the wedding theme — a great example of how lighting can make or break the mood!

Red, Green and Gold

It is easy for Christmas weddings to come across as too cold and heavy (because of the dark colours involved) but definitely not this one! We loved how the couple set their Christmas wedding in a rustic outdoor venue to create a perfect balance. The opulent and festive colour palette of red, green and gold blends immaculately with the warm tones in the background. Also, the contrast of the ornate furniture and decorations against the casual open air setting is an interesting way to lighten up the affair! The bride’s outfit also deserves a special mention — the selection of a fur bolero with a lace-sleeved dress is a smart way to keep warm in the chilly weather while keeping the fashion quotient high! The embellished accessories are also a perfect fit for a winter Christmas wedding.

Woman takes photo of Christmas lights, but accidentally captures more…

Joy Son of Minneapolis had been taking photos of the beautiful Christmas light display at St. Paul, Minn when she unintentionally captured the moment a man dropped to one knee and asked the love of his life to marry him.

After realizing it, Joy posted the photo on Instagram with hopes of finding the engaged couple… and the power of the Internet worked!

(Photo credit to Joy Son’s Instagram)

The newly engaged woman, Stephanie Yarian, was alerted by a friend that her photo was in the newspapers and she connected with Joy on Instagram. Yarian, 22, is from Colorado but attends the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, where she met her fiance Luke.

And Stephanie had this to say about the photo…

“Hi there!

My name is Stephanie and I have been seeing my picture of my proposal from last night all over! Just wanted to get in contact and let you know that my fiance, Luke, and I got engaged and are sooo excited this moment was captured!

Wedding Inspiration: When We Were Young

If you’re looking to add some fun and colour to your wedding, what’s like a dig into your treasured childhood memories to help you along? Today, we round up some of the best childhood-inspired wedding touches around the web that you can incorporate into your wedding.

Childhood Snacks

(Photo from Intimate Weddings)

Who says that retro biscuits can’t be pretty too? (Photo from Pinterest)

Instead of the usual cakes and pastries, why not take your guests down memory lane with these nostalgic snacks that are bound to bring up a few cries of “wow so old school” all around? Think along the lines of your pasar malam snacks such as cotton candy and kachang puteh, and your mama shop snacks such as the retro biscuits with coloured sugar tips that you used to get from that uncle in your neighbourhood.

Honestly, kids are not the only ones who love Lego, we bet there are plenty of adults around who have a penchant for these joyful bricks (we’re one of them). Get creative with this favourite toy from your childhood by building table numbers or cake toppers for your decorations! They would definitely add a playful dash of colour to the overall look.

Here’s another one we can’t resist — balloons! Balloons are an affordable way to add some spice to your decorations. Depending on the colour palette you pick, they can go from being romantic (check out the pastel balloons above!), elegant (yes you heard us right, just pick the silver and gold ones!), and downright fun (we absolutely love the ones above, which are dipped in gold confetti)! We’re betting these decorations would be a hit with your junior guests as well.

Fun Activities

Racking your brains to think of what you could possibly entertain your guests with apart from the predictable photo booth? We love the idea of a bounce house — haven’t we all jumped on one of those before at a fun fair when we were young? Hire one of a decent size so the fun is open to adults too! Another idea we like is a temporary tattoo booth — this brings back memories of those free temporary tattoos stickers that often come as treats from our childhood snacks! Now you don’t have to think twice about getting that gothic tattoo on your arm.

Sparklers are a dream to have at your wedding because they capture on photos so beautifully. Contrary to what some people may think, they work for both day and night weddings too! In the day, you can have your guests give you a sparkler send-off as you are stepping out from your solemnisation. As for night, I’m sure you wouldn’t need us to tell you how much fun you can have with your sparklers! A sparkler table piece like the one above is also a dramatic and unique piece of decoration you can consider.

Do you have any other ideas that would be good for a childhood-inspired wedding? Let us know!

Fashion: Halfpenny London

Here at Wedding & Travel we always love scooping out the most beautiful bridal designs around, and today we introduce you to Kate Halfpenny, an award-winning stylist and costume designer based in London.

Often described as an “industry secret”, Kate Halfpenny has dressed many of our favourite celebrity style icons such as Kate Moss and Rihanna. But somewhat different from her edgy apparel collections, Kate Halfpenny’s signature look for her bridal collections are strongly influenced by the vintage style and often feature luxe and sensual pieces crafted from the lethal combination of satin and lace.

From the lookbook images we see, Kate Halfpenny has certainly put her styling chops to good use in creating these breathtaking pictures below! We especially loved how she put together these cinematic and atmospheric scenes with her bold and imaginative use of flowers and choice of a muted colour palette.

For Kate Halfpenny, 2015 is also the year of the backs, in terms of trends for wedding dresses. As such, we see a generous interpretation in her collection, with a large number of dresses that feature illusion backs or beautiful deep low backs. Kate Halfpenny also tosses up a twist we love in her designs with embellished backs — a low-back design embellished with a flower belt — how dainty is that!

And perhaps, another reason why we love Kate Halfpenny is the fact that she has a section on her website that features real brides in her wedding dresses. (You can see some of our favourite picks below.) Now you don’t have to worry about over-stylised images that do not translate into real life. And that, we must say, is good news for all our brides.
