Fashion: Dresses for the Mothers

There is no lack of articles on bridal fashion for the bride out there, but what about something for the bride’s mother and mother-in-law? Apart from the bride, we dare say here are two women who deserve to look their best on this big day too! Shopping for the perfect outfit for the mothers is far from easy — the dress will have to be age-appropriate, while still being classy and not frumpy. Today, Wedding & Travel has rounded up some inspiration from around the web to get you started on your search.

The Classic Gown

If there is one thing you should remember, that’s ‘simple is best’ — one can never go wrong with a well cut gown in a classic silhouette. We recommend that you cut down on the skin-baring and choose a sleeved dress for the mothers. Alternatively, you can also throw on a bolero or scarf  over strapless and sleeveless gowns (which might be a little easier to find.) More adventurous mothers can also consider an off-shoulder gown that shows off some décolletage.

We love the first sleeved lace gown as it looks glamorous while offering coverage for the arms, which are typically a problem area for mothers. The second dress shows that a sleeved gown can look absolutely light and flattering on the body as well — simply pay attention to the fabrics used. (Pictures from White Azalea)

Voluptuous mothers would look divine in gowns that make use of clever draping to give the illusion of a slimmer silhouette. For mothers who are more bottom heavy, a dramatic neckline would help to draw attention upwards. (Picture from Dotaroot)

The Dress Suit

With the advent of androgynous fashion in the recent years, another fashion choice that the mothers can consider is that of the dress suit. While some may be worried this look might be too masculine, the following pictures will assure you that with the right touch, this can a smart and chic look as well! The trick is to always pick well-tailored pieces that would accentuate the mothers’ womanly curves, instead of conceal them. The styling of hair and make up can also make or break this look!
