Founded by fashion designer Yael Aflalo, Reformation was born out of Aflalo’s strong feelings against the wastage that is common during production in the fashion industry. In response, Aflalo first started Reformation as a side project that sets out to create what it envisions without excess. Little did she know that the response for her environmentally sustainable fashion process would be so positive, that she now works on Reformation full-time.
Reformation’s entire fashion process, from designing to manufacturing to shooting and styling, takes place in the label’s same headquarters located in Los Angeles — a rare feat in today’s mass-produced market. This streamlined process ensures that a skirt can be produced from nothing in less than a month.
A big area of emphasis for Reformation’s sustainable practices lies in sourcing for the right fabrics. Noting that the textile industry is one of the most chemically dependent industries, Reformation only produces its clothes from textiles made from sustainable materials; repurposed vintage clothes; and rescued deadstock fabrics. The green practices extends to the label’s office practices as well, which extols the use of eco-friendly packaging, recycled paper, soy-based inks and so on.
In case you’re wondering, Reformation serves up some beautiful night looks as well. Unlike its day looks that are more sweet and feminine, the label’s night looks are polished and elegant, cut in simple classic silhouettes with luxe fabrics. Details such as cut outs help to inject some interest and sex appeal in the outfit.
Apart from its impressive drive to keep things environmentally sustainable, another reason for Reformation’s cult following is its belief in embracing different body types and natural womanly curves. Starting out in Los Angeles, the label has since made its way to New York, where it was similarly well-received, so much so that it is planning for another upcoming store in SoHo.
