Just Married: Charlie Young weds Singaporean boyfriend

This could perhaps count as one of Singapore’s most paparazzi-filled wedding of the year.

The marriage of Charlie Young to her beau of 19 years, Singaporean Khoo Shao Tze, attracted not just local media. Reporters from Hong Kong and Taiwan turned up in full force at W Singapore in Sentosa, where the wedding was held last Saturday (Nov-2). The attention is only appropriate given Young’s status as one of Hong Kong’s most charming movie actress in the mid 1990s and once upon a time, bestowed with the title of “玉女” (in English, means girl-next-door).

The couple, who began dating in 1997, have come a long way before finally tying the knot. After an on-off relationship since their first break-up in 2007 which the media speculated to be linked to Khoo’s business failure, the couple finally reconciled in the year 2011. Khoo is said to have popped the question in May this year. When asked about the proposal, the 43-year-old groom declined to reveal details but he revealed a sweet confession by describing 39-year-old Young as “a beautiful angel he had known throughout their 19 years of dating”.

The Wedding: In accordance with Charlie Young’s preference for minimalism, the wedding was supposed to be a simple and low-key celebration. While the latter didn’t quite materialize with the media’s full attention, the 30-table banquet was said to have played out just like what the golden couple wanted. The ballroom was decorated in purple and guests were given a “playful black tie” dress code.

According to Hong Kong media, all expenses, including hotel and air fare for family and friends flying into Singapore, were paid by the groom. Total damage, approximately SGD $2 million.


The Wedding Dress: The beautiful bride had on Canadian designer, Romona Keveza’s “Legends by Romona Keveza” white gown with only a matching diamond necklace. The off-shoulder figure hugging sleek dress with a fishtail design at the bottom is speculated to be approximately $6,400.

At her second appearance before the media, the radiant actress-turned-director changed into a champagne tulle evening gown.


The Ring: True to her low-key character, no details about the wedding band was revealed. Hong Kong paparazzi only speculate it to be a 3-carat diamond ring.

The Wedding Invite: The card was printed with a blissful photo of the couple diving in the Maldives. This same picture was later enlarged into a board and placed in front of the ballroom that night for guests to sign on and leave behind their blessings.


The Guests: It was glitzy and glamorous as a galore of Hong Kong and Taiwan celebrities flew in for the wedding. Apart from actress Anita Yuen and movie director Tsui Hark, Young’s close friends singer Gigi Leung and actress Angelica Lee. who attended with their other half, were the emcees for the night. Singer Valen Hsu played bridesmaid to the bride, whom she had known for years now. Superstar Aaron Kwok could not attend due to job commitments but he was represented by his manager and recorded a congratulatory video for the bride. According to local media, guests received a miniature angel figurine as gifts.
