Ring out the bells, Singapore!

Musical spectacular Notre Dame de Paris, adapted from ‘The Hunchback of Notre-Dame’ penned by French Novelist Victor Hugo, will be taking residence at Marina Bay Sands, Grand Theatre from 17 December till 5 January next year.

This will be the first time the widely popular show, which tells of a heart wrenching love story between the unfortunate Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral Bell Ringer, the hunchback Quasimodo and the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, performs in Singapore. Audiences will be treated to the English version of this emotionally-charged musical that has been dubbed as “one of the most powerful love stories in history on par with Romeo and Juliet” by its organizer, Base Entertainment.

Notre Dame de Paris, created by lyricist Luc Plamondon and composer Richard Cocciante, has been staged over 4000 times since its premiere in Paris in September 1998, chalking up more than 10 million spectators worldwide. It is originally played in French until the year 2000 when it was given a new life in English. The English lyrics to the show were written by Will Jennings, most noted for his Oscar-winning song ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from ‘Titanic’. Singer Celine Dion also makes a guest appearance for ‘Live for the One I Love’ in the English language album.

Apart from beautiful melodies and vocal performances, the musical is also promising audiences a visual feast with acrobatic contemporary dance choreography. The show’s main cast of 7 members, along with 24 dancers and acrobats, will be wowing you with their deft moves, be it flying across the stage under fantastic arcs or tumbling from a bungee rope above the stage, while incorporating gymnastics, contemporary and break dance moves into their repertoire.

That is not all. All of these will be complemented with a impressive stage set featuring a 12-metre high ‘climbing wall’ that will represent the facade of the grand cathedral. Be prepared to be blown away, Singapore.
