Overseas Pre-wedding Photography in Taiwan 101

Text Lin Zixin

It is little wonder why Taiwan’s currently the hottest pre-wedding photography spot with Singaporean lovebirds. Apart from fact that the island boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in Asia thanks to its mild seasons, the state also manages to be effortlessly cosmopolitan and laidback at the same time – a feat rarely accomplished by any other place.

Spring and autumn are widely recommended as the best seasons to visit, since temperatures are cool and comfortable. Summers can get a little overbearingly hot, but you can get amazing shots of the sky, sea and sand. Popular sceneries in Taiwan include its pristine coasts, flowers including cherry blossoms, lilies and lavender, forests and grasslands, and last but not least, its vibrant cityscapes.

But before you rush off to book yourself on the next flight to Taiwan for your wedding shoot, know that the process to getting those gorgeous photos taken is less straightforward than you would imagine. Spend some time on getting to know the possible pitfalls and who best to approach for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. After all, you’ll want to make sure this gets remembered for all the right reasons.

The World Is Not Enough

It is understandable that we want to make the best out of our experience overseas, but sometimes we can forget that not everywhere is as small and compact as Singapore. If you have an idea of the spots you are going for, be mindful of the distance between them and communicate with your bridal boutique beforehand to settle the itinerary. Also, if the sights you are going for are seasonal, be sure to check ahead and arrange for alternatives just in case they are not available.

We Need To Talk

Communication with your bridal boutique prior to the shoot is essential. Most reputable boutiques often compile a checklist of what you want or don’t want before the shoot to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible during the real deal. If you have very specific requests, be sure to inform your boutique well ahead of time. Better still, if you want to be totally free of regrets, prepare what you need yourself if possible.

Don’t Judge A Book by Its Cover

Don’t commit yourself immediately to the package with the lowest price tag. Find out if there are any hidden terms, or information that has been withheld from you. Remember, the pre-wedding photography experiences goes beyond the shoot itself to include the pre-shoot logistics and post-shoot photo-choosing session. It is always wise to pay more for a reputable bridal boutique with excellent pre- and post-sales service than to scrimp on a lesser-known boutique who might leave a bitter aftertaste to your experience.

Who’s Who

In Singapore, there are three types of bridal boutiques that offer pre-wedding photography shoots to Taiwan: Singaporean boutiques, Taiwanese boutiques with a Singaporean branch, and Taiwanese boutiques who advertise in Singapore.

Singaporean boutiques
With these boutiques, the advantage is that you can be sure of dealing with the same team of people through the entire process. Also, you can select your gowns locally before the shoot, saving you some precious time in Taiwan. The downside, on the other hand, is that the costs are usually slightly higher and there is a greater need for you to research beforehand on the spots you are interested to go to. Most local boutiques offer packages to Taiwan.

Taiwanese boutiques with a Singaporean branch
Flexibility and individualisation are the keywords here, as these boutiques have the most comprehensive grasp of Taiwan and can therefore offer a wider range of itineraries, ready-made or customised. You can also opt to choose your gowns beforehand in Singapore or over at the boutique’s Taiwanese outlet. However, keep in mind that if you go for the latter option, your time over at Taiwan will probably be more packed than you would like it to be. Bluebay Dream Wedding, Julia Wedding News and Cangai Bridal are some boutiques you can consider.

Taiwanese boutiques who advertise in Singapore
These boutiques neither work with local partners nor have local branches, but come to Singapore occasionally to promote their services. While the prices offered are probably the most competitive, remember that the level of security is likewise the lowest since there is no local counterpart you can liaison with for your needs. If you must, only choose to work with boutiques that are represented at reputable wedding exhibitions and not just any boutique at a kiosk in your heartland mall. After all, it never hurts to exercise some caution.

Now that you’ve got the basics down pat, it’s time to check out the sites.

Breathtaking destinations you have to see to believe!

“A visit to the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, is so surreal it’s like entering into a different world” says Liza, who introduced us to this magical place. Enclosed in a sea of mostly blue, white, purple and pink wisteria, the park is whimsical and fairytale-like. Wisteria are known as “fuji” in Japanese and perhaps this explains why the Japanese love them so much.

Besides flowers, the park also consists of restaurants and shops. There is a small entrance fee to pay which may fluctuate according to season. The peak season for the park is usually between late April and early May, where entrance fees will cost around 1000 yen (pictures seen here were taken in early May). During winter, the park puts on an impressive winter illumination display that combines multi-coloured LED lights and screens with synchronised music.
