True Love in Taiwan

The good-old perennial travel destination for a leisure and relaxing trip. It can only be Taiwan! It’s near to Singapore and air tickets are relatively cheaper, making it a great honeymoon option for many people. No matter whether you are considering Taiwan for its irresistibly tantalizing eating finds in every corner of its streets and night markets, or for its awe-inspiring scenery, it is a honeymoon destination that won’t let you down! Take a look at these top 3 recommendations W&T has for you if you are planning a Taiwan trip:

1) Stargaze at Nantou (南投)

Picture from tripzilla.com

When Singaporeans think of stargazing, the first thing that comes to mind is probably “Singapore has no stars”. With the “lack of stars”, it will be a fun and exciting, albeit unconventional experience to stargaze when you are overseas. Taiwan has just the perfect place to catch a dazzling array of stars across the night sky. With stargazing as part of your honeymoon itinerary, it will definitely be a romantic and magical memory for the both of you. Embrace your significant other in your arms as you make a wish under the stars. Who knows, you might just be lucky enough to spot a shooting star! Cingjing (清境) is a good location to do some stargazing as it is situated on higher altitudes. If you are heading to Cingjing the next time you travel to Taiwan, why not join in for a stargazing tour? Some homestay inns (民宿) in Cingjing organize such star-gazing tours, where you will travel up to Hehuanshan (合欢山) for an enchanting star-gazing night followed by an enthralling view of sunrise.

2) Wulai (烏來) Hot Springs

How can you not try out the famous Wulai hot spring when you’re in Taiwan? Hot spring baths in a hotel or resort are too mainstream. At Wulai, get ready to indulge in a hot spring experience like never before at the open-air mountainside public hot spring! The hot spring is situated next to the bank of Nanshi River, and directly channelled from steaming rocks beneath. The name Wulai is derived from the Atayal language, a dialect spoken by one of the Taiwanese aboriginal tribes, and refers to “steaming water”. The water of Wulai hot spring is famously known as “beauty spring” for its therapeutic benefits. It contains rich elements of alkaline sodium bicarbonate, and is clear, transparent and odourless. As you and your significant other soak in this soothing hot spring, your eyes are also in for a treat with beautiful natural landscape and waterfall views surrounding you. The popular Wulai Waterfall is estimated to be 80m high, and looks like a spectacular white silky cloth pouring down from the sky above. Pamper your skin with the most natural beauty treatment, and feel wrapped in the tranquillity of nature’s paradise! After a relaxing hot spring, engage in some activities such as fishing, swimming or camping or simply take a stroll along the Wulai Old Street while digging into aboriginal cuisines at Atayal restaurants.

3) Bai Sha Wan (白沙湾), Kenting

When we think of Kenting, we usually think of its pristine white-sand beaches, caves, coral reefs, cool sea breeze and lots of sunshine for an unsurpassable tropical resort stay. Situated at the Southern tip of Taiwan, Kenting boasts a number of gorgeous beaches. With popular beaches jam-packed with crowds, it can get a little annoying trying to have a relaxing dip in the sea, or to find a perfect spot to suntan. Bai Sha Wan is a relatively uncrowded beach in Kenting, slightly hidden away from the main tourist beach spots. You will be delighted to find that you can enjoy a quiet time there with your significant one, with no crowds of tourists photobombing you in the background of the azure, sparkling sea! Bai Sha Wan is known for its long stretch of fine white sands and clear waters, which makes it a wonderful snorkelling spot! It is also ideal for other water sports activities like hang gliding, and rental of equipments are readily available for adventurous couples. There is a campground and some food vendors at the beach entrance, so you can opt to camp there with your loved one for a night. Bai Sha Wan is indeed a water paradise of its own!

1) Nara Park

One of the major attractions of Nara, an ancient city with historic temples and shrines, is the Nara Park (奈良公園) where adorable and friendly deer are always ready to greet you! The park is home to nearly 1,200 freely roaming deer. These beautiful animals are considered to be the messengers of the gods according to Japanese legend, hence they are regarded sacred. They are seen as a natural treasure, and their amazingly tame nature has captured the hearts of many locals and tourists alike. There are stalls that sell exclusive deer crackers around the vicinity of the park, so you can purchase some and feed them. Adapting to the Japanese custom of bowing, some deer will even bow to visitors to ask to be fed! Have a wonderful day walking hand-in-hand with your significant other and have these deer follow you from behind as you stroll along the park. What a cute and fascinating sight!

You can also visit the nearby Todaiji Temple (東大寺) at 500 yen (S$6.30) per ticket. It is one of Japan’s most historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. There is a spacious courtyard where you can walk on flower-lined pathway all the way to the world’s largest wooden building known as the Great Buddha Hall. You and your significant other can try your luck on passing through a thick wooden column tunnel. People who managed to pass through are said to be able to achieve enlightenment!

There is the Kasuga Taisha (春日大社) in the area as well, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara”. It is popular for the many bronze and stone lanterns leading up to the shrine. The outer area is free-of-charge, but there is a fee of 500 yen (S$6.30) if you want to have a look at the inner area of the shrine.

2) Kiyomizu Temple

Make a trip down to the ever timeless Kiyomizudera (清水寺) – which literally means “Pure Water Temple”, situated in Kyoto, Japan. The temple derived its name from the pure waters of the Otowa Waterfall within the premise itself, and is one of the recognized UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kiyomizudera is renowned for its huge veranda that juts out from the main hall over the hillside, supported by 13-metre high wooden columns. This impressive architecture was built entirely without the use of nails! Standing on the veranda allows you and your significant other to bask in an astounding, colourful view of blooming cherry and maple trees in spring and fall, as well as the picturesque view overlooking the Kyoto city.

Behind the main hall is the notable Jishu Shrine dedicated to Okuninushino-Mikoto – a god of love and matchmaking. You and your significant other can drop by and pray for everlasting happiness together. While the both of you are there, why not try walking between a pair of “love stones” placed 18 metres apart, just for the fun of it? Legend has it that if you are successful in finding your way from one stone to the other with your eyes closed, you will have luck in finding love. If you require guidance in moving between the stones, it is believed that you will also need an intermediary in your love life.

Visitors can collect and drink from the waterfall using cups attached to long poles. Do as the locals do, and be granted a healthy and long life together as a couple!

You can then end your day by watching the sunset in this auspicious temple with your loved one, the most romantic way to bless your marriage with eternal bliss! Whether you are here at the Kiyomizudera to admire the breathtaking views, pray for a successful love life, or good health in general, this is one site in Japan that will keep you spellbound and enthralled.

Mount Fuji (富士山) is one of the must-visit destinations if you’re travelling to Japan! However, do you know that the volcanic mountain is surrounded by a cluster of lakes named Fuji-Goko (Fuji Five Lakes)? You and your significant other can plan some activities around Lake Yamanaka (山中湖), which is the largest of the five lakes and is unofficially known as “Swan Lake”. It was granted the UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Fujisan Cultural Site”. The lake is famous for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, water-skiing, and windsurfing. If you and your significant other are not into water-related sports/ activities, why not get on a swan-shaped paddle boat or a large swan ferry boat with its head and long neck in close proportion to a real swan?
